The Amazing and Attractive Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd, or as it is affectionately known
as, the Aussie, is a beautiful, medium sized, well balanced,
robust, rustic dog. The dog is slightly long than it is
tall. One of the most outstanding identifying
characteristics of this breed is the naturally docked
bobtail.

The Australian Shepherd stands squarely on all fours and has
a strong deep chest. The front legs should be straight and
the front dewclaw can be removed or not depending on the
owner's preference. The rear dewclaws generally are removed
since the breed was created for field work. The feet are
oval, compact and have arched toes.

The top of the Aussie's head is on average the same length
as the slightly tapered muzzle. The ears are erect,
triangular and slightly rounded at the tips. The head has a
moderate stop and the teeth should come together in a
scissors bite. The oval, medium-sized eyes may be brown,
amber, blue, or any combination or variation including
marbling and flecks.

The coat of an Australian Shepherd is medium-length and
medium-textured. It can be straight or wavy. It is weather
resistant and has an undercoat. The undercoat can be thick
or thin depending upon the climate the dog lives in.

The hair on the head is shorter and smooth, along with the
hair on the ears, below the hocks and the front of the
forelegs. They often have a longer feathering on the back of
their legs and a ruff around their neck that is more
pronounced on the male dog.

The coat may be liver (red), or blue merle (marbled
pattern), solid black and solid liver (red). Aussies can
have white markings and/or tan points, all of these colors
and patterns are accepted.

The Aussie is a perpetual puppy that loves everything and
everyone. They are affectionate, courageous and loyal and
are great with children. They are naturally protective and
will guard children, and may even come and get you when the
children are in trouble.

They are very highly intelligent and easy to obedience
train, and excel in agility and other disciplines. They are
agile, attentive and eager to please and seem to have a
sixth sense about the needs of their owners.

Because they were bred to be intelligent, independent
thinking, alert and attentive working dogs, Australian
Shepherds must have exercise, both physical and mental,
otherwise discipline and behavioral problems can arise.
