Is the Bernese Mountain Dog the Right Breed for You?
The Bernese Mountain Dog or Berner Sennenhund is supposedly
a descendant of the Roman Molosser that was crossed with
livestock guardian dogs of the Alps. This dog is an all
purpose farmhand dog. They can guard livestock and property,
drive cattle and be hitched to a wagon to move stuff from
one area to another.
They were originally called Dürrbächler, for the small town
Dürrbach where tri-color dogs were especially plentiful. In
Berne the weavers used the Berner as a draft animal.
During the 1800's there were many popular Swiss paintings
with tri-colored dogs in them. These scenes were invariably
pastoral in nature.
There are four breeds of Sennenhund. They are listed below:
- Appenzeller Sennenhund, Appenzeller
- Berner Sennenhund, Bernese Mountain Dog
- Entlebucher Sennenhund, Entlebucher Mountain Dog
- Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
Today they are a unique large dog that has a distinctive
tri-colored coat. Unfortunately they are suffering a decline
due to an unusual health problem of contracting often fatal
cancers early in life. Efforts are being made to find the
cause and to again revitalize the breed.
In general they are good with other dogs and pets. Around
strangers they are wary but friendly. This dog needs to be
well socialized and is a pack dog. It will never be happy
penned in the backyard or kennel; it will want to be with
its people at all times.
These dogs are wonderful and gentle and adore children. They
are easy to train because they are smart. They are also
natural watchdogs but they are not overly dominant like some
breeds. A Bernese Mountain Dog will be your loyal friend for
life. The dog is alert, good natured and self confident.
