How to Clean your 14K Gold Dog Charms

Precious metals, especially gold, have always been used as
jewelry both for individuals and to give as gifts to loved
ones. And now there is a big movement toward not only giving
jewelry to your girlfriend or spouse but also to your
favorite pet.

But over time you may notice that wonderful 14K gold dog
charms that you bought for your favorite dog and attached to
its gold or leather collar have become duller looking. You
may wonder, "How do you clean your 14K gold dog charms
without harming the jewelry and your dog?"

The oils secreted by your dog's skin, or any powder, shampoo
or dirt will affect the condition of the 14K Gold charm that
you have given your dog. Your dog's scratching or the teeth
of its playmate may have scratched or damaged your charm.

When your 14K gold dog charm or its gold chain become dirty,
tarnished and scratched you should know how to properly
clean it. First, do not use any harmful chemicals to clean
your dog's gold charm. Chemicals may transfer to its fur or
skin and make it sick or cause it to break out in a skin
rash.

Before you start to clean and care for your dog's 14K charm
you need to check it over for loose clasps, loops or prongs
to prevent the loss of any gems or pieces associated with
the charm.

Clean the gold charm with some water and a soft bristled
tooth brush to remove most of the dirt and oil. Dry the gold
charm with a cloth and let it dry completely, then polish it
again with the soft cloth. This is usually enough to clean
most pieces of 14K gold jewelry. Beware of using toothpaste
to clean your gold jewelry; some types of toothpastes have
silicates in them that can scratch the gold.

Another way to clean your 14K gold dog charms if they are
very dirty is to steam them for twenty minutes in a
vegetable steamer. Put water into a pan and bring it to a
boil, then put your gold into the steamer and put the
steamer onto the pan. Boil the water for twenty minutes
(Don't let the pan boil dry.) and let the gold charms cool
before removing them. This will remove the oils and dirt but
if you have any sensitive gems like pearl, opal, or emerald
in the charms, you do not want to use this method because it
can damage the stones.

To remove scratches in 14K gold pieces you should use a
buffing cloth and gently buff the outside of the charm until
it shines again. Do not buff any soft gems or you may
scratch them. Or you can take the 14K gold dog charm to your
jeweler and they often will buff the piece out for free.
