English Setters
The English Setter is a friendly, gentle, mild mannered,
placid, and sensitive dog that is really great with
children. They love affection and are enthusiastic and
lively outdoors while being relatively inactive indoors.
There are two types of English Setters: the field English
Setter and the show English Setter. The field type English
Setter is in general lighter and smaller and more active
than the show type.
The development of the first rudimentary setter was in
France in the fifteen hundreds. The breed began with a cross
between the French and Spanish Pointer. Three centuries
later the breed was transported to Great Britain where a
very intelligent breeder by the name of Sir Edward Laverack
developed the English Setter from early French hunting dogs.
Because Laverack was the known progenitor of this breed the
dogs are sometimes referred to as the Laverack Setter.
Laverack's dogs were known for their great beauty and were
therefore the foundation stock for many top show dogs of
even today. Llewellyn, another English breeder, created the
famous hunting strain of English Setters. They are often
called Llewellyn Setters. The name "Setter" comes from the
sitting position that the dog takes when it points out game
to its master.
The English Setter is a beautiful, elegant, slim setter with
a unique speckled coat. The coat markings can be any size
and the speckling can be light or heavy. The long hair is a
bit wavy, flat and silky. The coat can come in colors of
brown, lemon, orange or white with blue speckling. Some dogs
can have a tri-color coat in blue, brown and white.
English Setters have a long head and a pronounced frontal
stop. The muzzle is almost half the length of the entire
head and is somewhat square. The eyes are brilliant, hazel
in color and large with a sweet expression. The nose is dark
colored. The ears are somewhat long, pendant with velvety
tips.
The chest is deep but not wide. The tail is straight and
tapers to a small point. The ears, legs, tail and underside
are all heavily fringed with hair, and the breed's running
appearance is one of grace and elegance.
