Fire Trucks


The Fire Truck, also called Fire Engine, Fire Apparatus,
Fire Pumper Truck, or Fire Appliance depending on the part
of the world they are in, is used to transport firefighters
and provide access to water, tools and safety gear. They are
geared toward fighting fires in the district in which the
fire house is located, but are sometimes called to help with
larger fires in other areas.

The modern fire engines are mostly powered by diesel
engines, but in times past fire engines were steam powered
or horse drawn to the site of the fire.

There are multiple ways that a Fire Engine can pump water
into the fire. One of the most common ways is through the
use of a hose via an array of valves. This hose can be
connected to a tank on board the Fire Apparatus or it can be
connected to area sources of water such as fire hydrants,
water tenders, or even a reservoir or river using draft
water suction.

A Fire Pumper might also have a fixed cannon, also called a
deck gun, fire monitor or deluge, on the truck which fires
water directly into the fire when aimed by an operator.
These, however, are limited in the range in which they can
maneuver to fire water and are usually only good for certain
specific tasks like airport fires. They are sometimes also
used for crowd control purposes.

Another method used to extinguish fires is the IFEX or
impulse fire-extinguishing system that sprays highly
pressurized water into a mist vapor that creates a cooling
off effect that can make putting out fires easier than just
using water alone.

The Dalmatian breed of dog is a symbol used to promote
firefighters and firefighting districts. One Dalmatian in
particular, known as Sparky, is a trademark for
firefighters. He goes around promoting fire safety,
firefighters and fire districts to children and schools.

The fire hydrant is also a symbol in the dog kingdom as a
ready potty on urban streets where there are few trees to
mark, and is often frequently referred to in that manner as
a joke by humans.
