Some things about Monkeys You didn't know
Monkeys are members of the order Primates which also
includes apes. The group of monkeys is split into two
sub groups.
Old World monkeys are the larger species such as
baboons, colobus monkeys and langurs; and the New World
monkeys are the smaller ones like marmosets and spider
monkeys. You can find out more about these on our
stuffed baboon page, stuffed spider monkey page,
stuffed marmoset monkey page and stuffed monkey pages.
Old World monkeys are more closely related to apes and
the nostrils face forward or downward. New World monkeys
have nostrils that face sideways. Old World monkeys
have a hard sitting pad on their rump which is absent
in the New World monkeys.
All monkeys are what is called quadrupedal which means
they can use their 2 arms and 2 legs equally well.
Each of their hands and feet have 5 digits or 5 fingers
and 5 toes. Their legs are slightly longer than their
arms, the those that leap the legs are even longer.
Their tails are usually longer than their bodies.
New World monkeys live in a large variety of social groups
where the Old World monkeys only live in two social groups
where they live in large groups or in harems where there is
one male and many females.
Monkeys are highly intelligent animals and are quick
learners, inquisitive and have a good memory. Because
of these qualities monkeys are able to adapt to a large
variety of conditions and survive in them.
