Answers:
1. Answer: a. Where they live. The main difference is just
symanticics. In most parts of the world, turtles that live
in water are called turtles, and turtles that live on land
are called tortoises. Terrapins are in between the two. They
live in swampy places, or start their lives by living in the
water and later move to land. In Australia, however, all
turtles are called tortoises except for the great sea
turtles. That is the only real difference between turtles,
terrapins and tortoises. Of course, all turtles, terrapins
and tortoises are different from each other in some aspect
or characteristic, they are very interesting animals.
2. Answer: C. Teeth. There is no turtle, terrapin, or
tortoise that has teeth. They have beaks that are good at
ripping off chunks of plants or chomping snails, and often
eat food that doesn't require tearing or grinding.
3. Answer: D. All of the Above. Turtles need a balance of
nutrition from protein sources like bugs and fruits and
vegetables to provide essential mineral and vitamins. Some
species of turtles eat mainly meat, and some eat mainly
plants, but most turtles will eat whatever they can find to
eat.
4. Answer: B. A Shell. All Turtles, Terrapins, and Tortoises
share the characteristic of having a bony protective
covering over their backs. In most turtles the top shell,
called the carapace, is made up of many bony pieces like
small shields all fastened together. Most have another
smaller shell, called the plastron, covering the bottom of
their bodies, and many can pull their head, legs and tails
in between their top and bottom shells for protection from
predators. There are a few species of turtles that have a
softer, leathery shell rather than a bony one, but they all
have a top shell of some kind.
5. Answer: A. Chelonia. This is the scientific family to
which all turtles, terrapins and tortoises belong. All
turtles, terrapins and tortoises are in the Animalia Kingdom
(animals, rather than plants), the Chordata Phylum (all
animals that have a backbone), Class Reptilia (as are all
lizards and snakes), Order Testudines (all reptiles with a
shell that ever lived), and Family Chelonia.
6. Answer: C. Maybe. It depends on the species that with
which you come in contact. The snapping turtles can cause
real physical harm to humans and has been known to bite off
fingers, and any turtle, if the turtle's keeper does not
follow proper hygiene, can pass potentially fatal E. coli
and other diseases to humans.
7. Answer: D. Both A and B. Many turtles are aquatic and
live in the water in streams, rivers and oceans. Tortoises
live on land, usually in a burrow in the ground.
