Sloughi
Laura Rupert
The Sloughi is a rare dog breed that originates from Morocco.
This breed is classified as a sight hound and has been in
existence so long their exact origin is unknown, however history
shows this dog breed was very valuable in Ancient Egypt.
The Sloughi is a lean dog with long legs, smooth coat, and a
regal appearance. Often times dogs in this breed are taller than
they are long. Males are generally 26 – 28 inches tall while
females are slightly shorter at 24- 27 inches in height. Males
are slightly heavier than females at 50 – 63 pounds and females
are 40 – 50 pounds. Sloughis have a short, fine coat and are
always a pale sand color to a reddish color. Sometimes they
display black markings in their coats and around their faces.
This breed also has superior vision, speed and is very gentle and
loyal to their owner. Caution should be taken by the owner,
however, when training begins. This is because the Sloughi is
very sensitive and does not respond well to anger. They are an
intelligent breed, but are independent and do not respond well to
inconsistent training. This breed needs trainers who are gentle,
consistent and fair.
The Sloughi breed gets along well with children and other animals
like cats, birds and other dogs. However, children who are rough,
disrespectful and don’t understand dogs are not toys will not get
along with a Sloughi. Be careful if you have very young children
and decide to buy a Sloughi.
Also, the Sloughi breed is a healthy breed with no known genetic
diseases. This is likely because the gene pool in Europe is
diversified enough not to rely on inbreeding. Because of this,
these dogs are healthy up to an advanced age and have no major
illnesses. Occasionally, older dogs experience arthritis or
cancer and some dogs may have a heart murmur. This is not the
case with all Sloughis, but just an overview of what some dogs of
this breed experience in late life. Most dogs of this breed live
between 12 and 16 years, while some live longer or shorter
depending on genetics and life experiences. It is not unusual for
a well bred Sloughi who has been well taken care of to live up to
20 years.
