SpongeBob SquarePants


SpongeBob SquarePants is a cartoon character from the hit
cartoon series "SpongeBob SquarePants" from Nickelodeon
Productions. The cartoon was created by marine biologist
turned artist and animator, Stephen Hillenburg. He has his
own production company called United Plankton Pictures, Inc.
"SpongeBob SquarePants" is the one the longest running
cartoon series on Nicktoons, second only to Rugrats.

The pilot episode aired right after the 1999 Kids Choice
Awards on Nickelodeon, on May 1, 1999. The second episode of
the cartoon aired on July 17, 1999 and opened the new
cartoon series. The second episode was called "Bubblest and
Ripped Pants."

The cartoon is set in Bikini Bottom, somewhere in the
Pacific Ocean. The entire town is set on the floor of a
lagoon. The character SpongeBob SquarePants is supposed to
be a sea sponge, but he looks more like a square yellow
kitchen sponge that is synthetic rather than a real sponge.

What is different about the SpongeBob SquarePants comics is
that although the entire series has some child humor and is
loved by children, the plots also include much adult humor
and situations. This has given the cartoon universal appeal
to young and old.

SpongeBob SquarePants now also has two cartoon movies that
have gone to theatres and the character has just as many
adult fans as child fans. The series is so popular that it
leapt from United States television to hit the international
TV stations as well.

Here is the intro song to the series, which hasn't changed
in all the years that the series has run (1999 to date):

Captain: Are you ready kids?
Kids: Aye-aye Captain.
Captain: I can't hear you...
Kids: Aye-Aye Captain!!
Captain: Oh! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Captain: Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!

Captain: Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!

Spongebob SquarePants is heavily merchandised and has
just celebrated ten years of running on May 1,
