The Beginnings of the Pittsburgh Steelers

Since their early beginning in 1933, the Pittsburgh
Steelers Football franchise has gone from lowly
origins to appearing in 8 Super Bowls.

The fifth-oldest franchise in the NFL,
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the 5th oldest franchise
in the National Football League. They were originally
named the Pittsburgh Pirates and were in the
Eastern Division of a 10 team NFL.

For most of the years from 1933 until the 1960's
the Steelers lost many more games than they won.
When Buddy Parker took over in 1957 he coached
the team to 5 seasons out of 8 that they won
more games than they lost. Parker is now third
on the all time Steelers list for wins by a head coach.

When Chuck Noll was hired in early 1969, he began to
rebuild the Steelers through the draft. His first year
was dismal with a 1 -13 record which did give them
a first round draft pick in Terry Bradshaw.

Noll's draft picks paid off big time and in
1972 the Steelers won their first division title
which ushered in a new era of a winning tradition
for the Pittsburgh Steelers which has continued to this
day.
