The Wonderful and Handsome White German Shepherd Dog
By: Tippy
A White German Shepherd dog, or simply White Shepherd dog,
is a dog that is a purebred, descended from the original
German Shepherd Dog bloodlines, that has a coat that is
completely white or white with some cream color. According
to the standard, the nose must be black.
White German Shepherds are not albinos. The original German
Shepherd line carried a recessive for all white coat hair,
in fact, the father of the first registered German Shepherd,
Horand von Grafrath, was a white shepherd named Greif. Any
two German Shepherd Dogs that both carry the white recessive
may give birth to some white dogs. Two White Shepherds
should always have only white pups.
In the beginning of the German Shepherd Dog's breed program
white dogs were considered just another color variation, but
in 1933 the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany for some
reason banned white dogs from the standard, and in 1968 the
American Kennel Club (AKC) followed suit. In 1998 the White
German Shepherd was officially disqualified by the Canadian
Kennel Club as well.
Beginning in the 1970's, various "White German Shepherd"
clubs were formed and fanciers began to work together to
preserve and promote White German Shepherds despite their
rejection by the AKC and the German club.
Today White German Shepherd Dogs have quite a few clubs and
groups that promote and show them as a breed. Some groups
proclaim that they are simply a color variation of the
German Shepherd dog and should be accepted as such. Other
groups, unhappy with the changes in the standards and
breeding goals of the modern German Shepherd Dog world in
general, work to keep the White Shepherd adhering to the old
standards for the German Shepherd Dog and want their dogs to
be considered an individual breed apart from the standard
German Shepherd.
One such group is the American White Shepherd Association
(AWSA), who wrote their own breed standard and are
petitioning the AKA for acceptance as a new breed. Only time
will tell whether or not they will succeed in creating a new
AKA registered breed. In the meantime, White German Shepherd
Dogs whose parents were AKC registered may be registered
with the American Kennel Club but they are not accepted in
AKC dog shows.
The United Kennel Club (UKC) has accepted the White Shepherd
as a breed and accepts both the White Shepherd standard and
the German Shepherd Dog standard. The UKC accepts and
registers the White Shepherd Dog.
However they are classified, White Shepherds share the
roots, appearance, intelligence and personality of the
standard German Shepherd Dog and are among the best working
and companion dog breeds, beautiful and suitable as pets,
family companions, service and working dogs, and protection
dogs.
