American Staffordshire Terriers Calendars

Is the American Staffordshire Terrier the Dog Breed for You?

The American Staffordshire Terrier male can reach nineteen
inches (forty-eight centimeters) in height and the female
can reach eighteen inches (forty-six centimeters) in height.
The dog usually weighs around sixty-seven pounds (thirty
kilograms). They are healthy dogs that are of medium height
but are very dense and strong for their size.

It is important that American Staffordshire Terriers get
regular exercise that isn't too strenuous. A daily walk is
necessary. An American Staffordshire Terrier that doesn't
get enough exercise can become hyper and hard to manage. A
daily walk is essential for this dog and proper obedience
training should be performed during the walk.

So, heeling the dog and making sure that it stays next to
you and doesn't pull you down the street is necessary, along
with proper leash training and exposing the pup to a variety
of environments and people.

Staffordshire Terriers, like most breeds, must have proper
socialization. When dogs of this breed aren't socialized
properly they can become aggressive.

This dog breed does have some problems with congenital heart
disease, hereditary cataracts and hip dysplasia. But in
general, if the dog is fed the right food and is kept
healthy with regular visits to the veterinarian any
hereditary problems, should they arise, can be managed.

The American Staffordshire Terrier can live in an apartment
if the owner takes care to make sure that they get
sufficient exercise. A yard is preferred so that the dog can
get regular exercise without constant attention. This breed
doesn't do well in extreme cold and so likes to live in
warmer climates.

Dogs of this breed, with a proper diet and exercise, can
live around fifteen years. The litter size varies from five
to ten puppies on average.

These dogs do require some grooming and should be brushed
regularly with a firm bristle brush. Bathe as needed. When
you wipe the dog off with a towel or chamois the coat will
be shiny. This breed sheds but not heavily. It may be
difficult to housebreak.

The American Staffordshire Terrier has been bred to be
gentle and protective. They make great family pets and
companions when guided properly by an experienced owner.
They also make great agility dogs, guarding dogs, police
dogs, pulling dogs and watchdogs.
