Bullmastiffs
The Bullmastiff is an alert, devoted, guard dog with a good-
natured temperament. They are affectionate and docile unless
provoked, but if provoked they become fearless and
protective. They will catch an intruder, knock the person
down and hold them and not attack usually.
The Bullmastiff breed was created by crossing Bulldogs and
Mastiffs in England. The Mastiff Bulldog is a breed dating
back to 1795 and in 1924 Bullmastiffs began to be judged in
competitions. In order for the breed to be considered a pure
breed they had to be bred for three generations.
The Bullmastiff is a very powerfully built dog. They are not
cumbersome and have a short back that is level and straight
between the loin and the withers. The tail tapers and is set
high and reaches to the hocks.
They have a dark, short, square muzzle that is about a third
of the length of their entire head. The nose has large
nostrils and is black. They have a broad wrinkled head with
medium-sized hazel eyes that should have an alert and
intelligent expression. Their ears are dark colored, wide-
set, v-shaped and pendant. The teeth should come together
levelly or undershot slightly.
The coat is slightly rough, short and come in brindle, fawn,
and red and often has black markings on the head and face.
The lighter fawn colors are usually preferred to the darker
brindle nowadays.
The Bullmastiff has a slightly rough, short-haired coat that
is easy to groom. They need to be combed or brushed with a
hard bristle brush regularly. Baths should only be given
when needed. This breed sheds very little. Their feet will
have to be checked regularly because they are heavy dogs,
and they will need their nails trimmed regularly.
This dog benefits from being around its family. They are
great dogs that enjoy human company and like to get
affection and love from their owners.
