Is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel the Right Dog Breed for You?
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an extremely social dog
that enjoys constant companionship from other dogs or
humans. They do not like being left alone for long periods.
These dogs are very obedient and patient and one of the most
friendly in the toy group.
The puppies of this breed need to be well socialized and
hand-reared in order to insure friendliness and security.
When the dog greets someone they have a tendency to lick the
hand of that person. These dogs have a deep bond with their
owners but are not reserved around strangers. They are a
very playful breed.
Some Cavaliers have been known to show cat-like traits like
cleaning their paws, perching at the highest point they can
get to and displaying birding qualities. Cavaliers have been
seen to catch small birds that where flying low to the
ground. This is a result of their earlier days when they
were often used as a hunting dog. These dogs love to chase
and should never be allowed off the leash in insecure areas.
They will chase any small animal, bird or insect without
thought for their own safety. Care should be taken with them
when they are off the leash.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs are well behaved and enjoy
human, dog and older child companionship. They do need
discipline, guidance and training in order for them to be
comfortable in a household. Limits and rules should
definitely be set in stone. These dogs love to go outside
and play with their families or other dogs, and should never
be left alone all day. Many of these dogs do not do well
around very young children and small animals.
During the 1920's Roswell Eldridge, an American, offered
monetary prizes during the London Cruft's Dog Show to anyone
exhibiting King Charles Spaniels with long noses. He wanted
to see a dog similar to those painted in Van Dyck's
paintings of King Charles II and his spaniels.
By the 1940's these dogs were reclassified as their own
breed and given the prefix Cavalier in order to separate the
breed from its ancestor the King Charles Spaniel.
These dogs can get between twelve and thirteen inches in
height and weigh between ten to eighteen pounds. These
measurements are based on a healthy average for this breed.
They normally live between nine and fourteen years.
