How to Clean 14k Gold Charms
People have worn charm bracelets for a long time and loved
them. And now the popular theory behind charm bracelets has
also been applied to your pet's collar. Now your dog or cat
can wear wonderful, sparkly 14K gold charms around its
collar while you wear equally beautiful gold charms that
represent your pets. In this way you and your pets can show
the world how much you value each other.
But over time every charm begins to get scratched or loses
its luster. So how should you clean your pet's 14K gold
charms?
Unlike what most people think, gold does tarnish, it just
does so very slowly. It will start by losing its luster due
to scratches, dirt and oils. If special care is not given to
keep your 14k gold charms in good condition they will become
less attractive and may even become damaged.
Before you begin to do maintenance on your 14K gold charms,
first check over the charm to see if it has any loose
catches, loops or prongs so as not to lose part of the charm
down the drain.
You can clean your 14k gold charms with a soft bristle tooth
brush and some warm water. You don't need to use toothpaste
like some people suggest, and if you do use toothpaste that
has silicates in it you can scratch your gold charm.
If your charms are very dirty, you can steam then clean by
putting the gold charms into a vegetable steamer for twenty
minutes and this will thoroughly clean them. You can then
take the charms out and buff them gently with a soft cloth.
If your 14k gold charm is scratched, you may need to buff
the scratches out with a buffing cloth, or ask your jeweler
to do it for you.
Even if your 14k gold charm has diamonds, rubies or
sapphires as part of the piece it can still be steamed with
no problem. But if you have the more sensitive jewels like
pearl, opal, emerald, tanzanite, etc. as part of the 14k
gold charm you shouldn't steam it or you may risk damaging
the gems.
14k gold charms are easy to clean and maintain if you care
for them regularly, but if you do not take proper care of
them they can become damaged beyond repair. With proper
cleaning they will stay beautiful and look striking on you
or your pet.
