The Dachshund is an affectionate, clever, curious, bold,
clownish, lively, proud dog that seems to be mischievous.
There are three varieties of Dachshund: the long-haired, the
short-haired and the wired-haired. Fanciers believe that the
long haired variety tends to be more laid back, whereas the
wire-haired is considered to be more clownish and outgoing.

The Dachshund breed came into being over one hundred years
ago in Germany. The word "Dachs" means badger and the dog
breed was created to follow animals into the ground.
Therefore the distinctive Dachshund characteristics such as
short powerful legs and long small body, so that the dog
could more easily flush prey and follow it even down into
burrows.

Because of their size and shape Dachshunds are often
affectionately called "wiener dogs" or "sausage dogs." And,
although the name Dachshund originated in Germany, there
they are called Dackel or Teckel.

Dachshunds are hound-type dogs although they are more often
kept as pets in modern times. They share characteristics of
both the hound and the terrier groups, and they are the only
breed certified to hunt below and above the ground, so it
has been argued that they should have their own category in
the show world.

With all varieties of Dachshund there are certain
characteristics that remain unchanged. All Dachshunds are
long, muscular, vigorous dogs with very short legs. The body
should have a sternum that is strong and protruding and an
abdomen that is moderately retracted. The tail is carried in
the same line as the back.

The skull is slightly convex and the head is long. The dog
has arched protruding eyebrows and dark brown or dark red
oval eyes that have an energetic and friendly expression.
The ears are long and hang to the cheeks, and are very
mobile. Dachshunds have non-pendent lips, strong jaws, and
the teeth come together in a scissors bite. This breed does
have a tendency to gain weight rapidly so you shouldn't
overfeed.

Dachshunds come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. The
coat comes in colors of black, blue (gray), chocolate
(brown), crème (blond with no trace of red, from golden
blond to platinum, the lighter the better), Isabella (tan or
fawn) and red (from strawberry blond to deep auburn). In the
wirehaired variety, crème is referred to as wheaten.
