Your Doberman Pinscher Dog's Health
Doberman Pinschers are a very popular breed and consequently
improper breeding has now led to an increase in genetic
diseases in the breed.
If you have chosen the
Doberman Pinscher
as your breed, be sure to
buy yours from a reputable breeder who can supply you with
health and genetic records for the parents and their lines
that show that they are Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
(OFA) certified to be clear of
Hip Dysplasia.
Also ask for a veterinarian's certificate that the puppy has
been tested for and is free of congenital heart disorders
and Wobblers' Syndrome. The puppy should have had its first
shots and a thorough veterinary exam, and you should get a
written contract and return guarantee with the puppy.
As your puppy grows, be sure that its food is not so rich
that it causes too fast growth. Extra fast growth promotes
joint problems in large dog breeds.
Also, eating large amounts of food at once is a danger for
any large dog due to the possibility of gastric torsion or
bloat (caused by a twisted stomach), which cuts off the
digestive circulation and leads to death if surgical
treatment is not applied immediately.
Watch your Doberman for unusual weight gain and lethargy, as
some Dobermans are vulnerable to hypothyroidism. Your
veterinarian can test for and treat this condition should it
occur. Other issues to be aware of and have your vet test
for are progressive retinal atrophy, which can lead to
blindness, and
Von Willebrand's
Disease, a genetic
hemophilia.
Another potential source of trouble with any dog is a food
allergy. Many dogs are allergic to corn, wheat or soy, which
are very common ingredients in many commercial dog foods. A
food allergy will cause very dry skin and/or excessive
shedding. The dog will scratch at the itch and it can lead
to permanent skin damage or even serious infections.
Another food issue that affects all breeds is grape
toxicity. Apparently something that is used in grape
vineyards is highly toxic to dogs and many dogs have died
after eating raisins or grapes. The first symptoms are
abdominal pain and vomiting. Be sure to contact your vet
immediately if your dog exhibits these symptoms, especially
if you know it may have eaten grapes or raisins.
