Cairn Terrier Dogs

The Cairn Terrier is an alert, bold, curious, fearless,
hardy, lovable, loyal, mischievous, restless and spirited
little dog. They are both friendly and independent. Some
owners have said that it seems with this breed that the
males are more affectionate and the females are more
independent.

Cairn Terriers like to do tricks and are easy to train. They
are very playful and naturally patient with children. Cairns
are adaptable dogs and will do well in new homes if they are
treated kindly.

This dog breed has been in existence since the 1500's. It
was first presented publicly in 1909 and by the 1930's it
was a very popular breed. The Cairn Terrier is one of the
original Scottish Terriers, and was probably a contributor
to breeds like the Scottish Terrier, Skye Terrier and
West Highland White Terrier.

The Cairn Terrier is named for the many farm and grave
markers in the United Kingdom that were created from piles
of small stones. The Cairn Terrier was developed to rid
vermin from these cairns. They were used as vermin
exterminators for centuries, but recently the breed is more
often mostly a companion dog.

The Cairn Terrier is great at Go-To-Ground Terrier trials.
The Cairn Terrier is great at: agility, competitive
obedience, hunting, performing tricks, tracking and as a
watchdog. And probably the most famous Cairn Terrier was
"Toto" from the film "The Wizard of Oz," who endeared
himself to generations.

The Cairn Terrier is known for its alert and fox-like
expression. They are hardy and very peppy little terriers
with a thick and shaggy outer coat and a soft undercoat.

The coat comes in colors of blackish, brindle, grayish, red
and sand. Any color other than white is okay, and dark
points on the ears, eyes and muzzle are preferred. While the
dog is a puppy the color keeps changing as the dog grows, so
adult color is not really predictable.

Cairn Terriers have a compact body that is around fourteen
inches from fore chest to the back of the hindquarters. It is
short with a good bone structure and is short. The head is
broad with a robust wide skull and a powerful but not heavy
muzzle. The teeth should come together in a scissors bite.

The head has a bushy top knot, eyebrows and a black nose.
The deeply set eyes are dark hazel. The ears are erect,
pointy and small. The tail is hairy, short and carried
gaily. Some faults to avoid are missing teeth, a pinkish
nose, a soft or curly body coat and white on the chest or
feet.
