When naming a cat, if one's imagination is totally at a loss,
look up the names of kings and queens and emperors. Male cats in particular
like names that link them to feats of greatness
Auriel Douglas
By: Miss Patches Marie Kitty Cat
Most people choose a name that they have already heard
before or have grown up with for a new kitten. This is a
familiar recognition that reinforces memories of the
previous cat or person. Other people will choose a name
based upon the appearance of the particular kitten. Still
other people choose a name for their kitten based on traits
that the kitten expresses.
Here is a list of popular cat names:
1. Tiger
2. Kitty
3. Smokey
4. Misty
5. Samantha
6. Sam
7. Tigger
8. Patches
9. Fluffy
10. Baby
11. Shadow
12. Muffin
13. Lucky
14. Missy
15. Max
16. Charlie
17. Rusty
18. Buddy
19. Midnight
20. Pumpkin
Naming your kitten is a personal thing between you and your
cat. A lot of times people pick names based upon the color
of the cat, like Misty for a gray cat or Shadow for a black
cat. Still others choose Patches for a tortoiseshell or
spotted kitten.
Some other people might name their kitten after a trait that
the kitten expresses, like Sassy for a cat with a lot of
sass, or Tiger for the cat that is a little wild and
untamable. Or Muffin for the cat that is sweet and good.
Some people choose names like Max or Charlie because they
knew another cat with a name like that or the cat reminds
them of a person with that name. A lot of cats are named
after famous people like Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Wherever the chosen name was found, people tend to name
their kittens after things that they like or love. There are
no doubt many kittens named things like Sugar or Cupcakes.
A person who is very literal-minded might name their kitten
"Cat." And leave it at that.
It is possible that the more creative the person the more
creative the name of the kitten will be. Like Razzamatazz
for a flashy-colored cat, or Mister Socks for a cat with two
white feet. This is all in good fun and often the names wind
up shortened to Razzy and Socks.
Whatever you name your kitten, it will eventually begin to
respond to it if you call it that name often enough. Try not
to make the name too long because then the cat will have
trouble recognizing it for training purposes. Otherwise
choose whatever name you think suits your kitten best.

"The Naming of Cats" by T.S Eliot
from "The Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats"
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
