Alpacas!
Alpacas are domesticated animals of southern Peru
and western Bolivia. Most scientists believe
they have descended from the guanaco, however
some believe the alpaca has been descended from
a cross between llamas and the vicuna.
Guanacos and alpacas are similar, but the alpaca
is a bit more compact and smaller weight. Guanacos
graze and browse for food, whereas alpacas are
strictly grazers.
Llamas are larger than alpacas, but because of
the thick fur of the alpaca, it does seem to be
of similar size.
Guanacos are wild ancestors of llamas and alpacas
and still on occasion, breed with them. They all do
well at high altitudes, but guanacos are better
adapted to these higher altitudes and also do
better in very arid conditions going without water
for longer periods of time.
Alpacas were early bred for their think coat of
very soft wool. In the wild, alpacas thrive in
very large herds on high mountainous grasslands.
Alpacas are one of six species in the family
Camelidae. In the genus lama, it is grouped
with the llama and guanaco. In the other species
are the vicuna, the dromedary camel and the
Bactrian camel. Be sure and check out our
stuffed camels and
