The Intelligent Spider Monkey
The Spider Monkey belongs to the scientific classification
genus of Ateles and is related to the woolly spider monkeys
in another genus called Brachyteles.
Their habitat ranges in the New World from southern Mexico
to Brazil, in tropical rain forests. These monkeys live in
large unpopulated, undisturbed, tracts of rain forest. They
like to eat ripe fruits straight from the tree.
Spider monkeys are constantly under threat from hunters and
encroaching development. There numbers are dwindling because
they do not reproduce well or quickly like many other
species of monkey.
The Red-faced Spider Monkey is currently on the Endangered
and Critically Endangered lists of species. The spider
monkey itself is on the Vulnerable to Becoming Endangered
list.
In intelligence tests the spider monkey rates a little above
gorillas. So the spider monkey is considered to be amongst
the most intelligent of Central and South American monkeys.
The oldest spider monkey that has been recorded in the wild
was age thirty-three years.
