The Persnickety Cat and it's Cat Litter
By: Alfred
Cats can be finicky when it comes to their cat litter and
they often refuse to use it if the texture or smell isn't
pleasing to them. So when first buying a new cat litter for
your cat start with a small bag and see if your cat likes
it. Otherwise your cat may turn up its nose at a cat litter
that it does not like and poop and pee elsewhere, for
example on your floor or bed.
There are four types of cat litter that
you and your cat can
consider.
The Clay clumping litter provides
moderate to maximum odor
control. It is easy to clean up, is biodegradable, and is
flushable and non-toxic. If clumps are removed once a day
then you should only have to replace all the litter once a
month.

Crystal cat litter is made from
sand or sand based. It

Natural and biodegradable cat litter is
made from pine,
paper, wheat or corn. It is available in clumping and non-
clumping versions. It is good for cats and humans with
allergies to dust. Many but not all are flushable. This
litter type provides moderate to maximum odor control. It is

non-toxic.
Keep in mind that your cat may have issues that you do not
know about. It may not be the litter at all but something
else in the environment that is making your cat turn up its
nose at using the cat litter box. A cat's sense of smell is
much more sensitive than yours, so storing your cat litter
in a neutral spot where there aren't a lot of odors is best.
The laundry room or the bathroom is not good spots for the
cat litter even if it makes sense to you. You want a room
that isn't used much and preferable does not have carpeting,
so cat litter spills are easy to clean up.
Also your cat's refusal to use the litter box after it had
been using it regularly could be a sign of something else,
for example a bladder infection, worms, or impaction in the
gut. If you cat starts associating your cat litter box with
pain it will stop using it. If your cat stops using the cat
litter box for no reason you can discern, taking your cat to
the vet for a checkup could save its life.
If the cat truly dislikes the cat litter you chose, here are
some tips for finding out what the cat is willing to use:
When first choosing a cat litter buy a small bag first. Then
move from one of the above types of cat litter to the other
until the cat starts using the cat litter regularly.
If no cat litter suits the cat, the cat may never have been
properly housebroken and this will take time and patience to
correct - time and patience that you may not have if you
bought this cat from a shelter and work at a job five days
out of the week. You may want to think about returning the
cat to the shelter and reporting the problem and choosing
another cat to take home with you. Always keep the health
and safety of the cat in mind before you take home a cat.
This will keep you and your cat healthy and happy and makes
for a long fruitful relationship.
