Presented by: Dr. Jane Bicks, D.V.M.
Although the Flat-Coated Retriever is a different
breed, it's nutritional requirements are similar to
those of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
High quality food will keep his muscles and coat in
healthy condition.
Antioxidants added to his food or as treats will help
extend his life while reducing oiliness in the coat

Flat Coated Retrievers: Born to Bring Things Back
The Flat Coated Retriever is a black or liver colored
retriever with a fine, medium length, sleek, thick coat that
is well feathered along the chest, legs and tail. The back
is short and square and the chest is deep and wide. The legs
are sturdy and have strong, round feet.
The long head is sleek and molded with a barely apparent
stop and wide muzzle. The eyes are dark brown or hazel and
the dog looks intelligent and aware.
They have somewhat small ears that lay flat to their head.
The nose is black for dogs with a black coat and liver
colored for dogs with a liver colored coat.
This breed was created in the eighteen hundreds by crossing
several already established dog breeds. These breeds
included the Irish Setter, Labrador, St. John's Newfoundland
and the Water Dog as well as several Collies. The breed was
somewhat popular until the beginning of World War I. After
that the breed fell well behind the very popular Golden
Retriever and Labrador.
The Flat Coated Retriever is a wonderful family dog and is
great with children. They are active, cheerful, friendly,
gentle, high-spirited, smart, sweet dogs that remain puppy-
like well into adulthood.
Dogs of this breed should be excellent swimmers and bird
retrievers. They have a great sense of smell and a good
intuition. They are also wonderful family dogs. They are
loved for their sweet exuberance and devotion. Dogs of this
breed are often loud and boisterous outdoors but quiet
indoors.
The Flat Coated Retriever is used for retrieving in thick
brush and trees as well as for open fields. They also work
well in marshy areas. Some of the breed's talents include
agility, hunting, retrieving, tracking and watchdog.
