Horses: Heavy, Light & Pony

Heavy Horse:
The heavy draft horse gives an impression of weight combined with
strength. The body is wide and he back broad, often accompanied
by rounded withers, which in some breeds, in the interest of
increased pulling power, may be higher than the croup. The body
is heavily muscled, particularly over the loin and quarters. The
shoulders are relatively upright to accommodate the collar, and
the legs are thick and short. The heavy horses usually stand
between 16 and 18hh. Their actions are short giving maximum
traction.

Light Horse

The light horse exhibits conformational features that make it
suitable to be ridden. The form of the back allows for a saddle
to be fitted easily. The "true" ribs, the first eight, are flat,
so that the saddle lies behind the trapezius muscle. The ten
"false" ribs are rounded and "well-sprung." The withers are
clearly defined, and the slope of the shoulders, from their
junction with neck and withers to their point, is about 60
degrees. Light horses usually stand between 15 and 17.2hh. The
action is long, low and economical, with little bend or lift in
the knee.

Pony:
Ponies differ from horses by virtue of their unique character and
size. They are deeper through the body in relation to their
height, while the length of the head is usually equal to the
wither-to-point-of-shoulder measurement, and that of the back
from wither to croup. There is also a difference in the action,
stemming from the early environment. Horses are rarely as
surefooted, and they do not have such a developed sense of
self-preservation as ponies. Ponies usually stand between 10 and
15hh.
