Chihuahua Dogs: History, Traits, Personality and Characteristics
Tippy & Alfred
The Chihuahua is a very small dog with an apple-shaped head
and a very short pointed muzzle. They have very dark, large,
round eyes that sometimes are luminous or dark ruby in
color. They are known for their very large erect ears.
Puppies have a "molera" on the top of their skull which is
essentially like the soft spot on a human baby that
eventually closes with age.
The body is stout and longer than tall. The tail is sickle
shaped and can be curled over the back or to the side. The
dog has a level back and legs that come down straight and
square.
Besides the common short haired version, there are also long
haired Chihuahuas. The coats of both types are common in
colors of chestnut, silver, fawn, or steel blue. However any
color is acceptable in the standard, including parti-colored
and black and tan.
The Chihuahua is a great companion dog that is affectionate,
courageous, enterprising, extremely lively and proud. They
are bold and saucy and can move swiftly to avoid being
stepped on.
They become very attached to their owners and are intensely
loyal. Chihuahuas don't seem to know that they are toy dogs,
and many have tried to defend their owners even to death.
But Chihuahua's can have behavior problems if they are led
to believe they are human, which is a common problem with
inexperienced Chihuahua owners.
The Chihuahua is the oldest American breed and the smallest
dog breed in the world. They are native to Mexico but some
say that their ancestors were mixed with other breeds
introduced there by the Chinese. At the end of the
nineteenth century they were taken to Europe.
The Chihuahua is named for the Mexican state where it first
became popular. To the Pre-Columbian Indians the breed was
sacred. These dogs are the most valued dogs in Mexico.
Some Chihuahuas are small enough that they can stand on all
four paws in a human's palm. The long-haired variety is
judged separately but is the same except for the length of
the coat. The Chihuahua is an economical and popular breed
of dog, and will live happily in any dwelling if the
temperatures are moderate and its beloved master is nearby.
